Community Development Riesco In Rio Verde
In a unanimous vote carried the day, the Commission for Environmental Assessment of Magellan’s and Chilean Antarctica Mina approved the draft Winter Mineral Isla Crisco development in the community of Rio Verde. In this vote were in addition to the Evaluation Committee chaired by the governor, Lillian Kusanovic, the mayor of Rio Verde, Tatiana Vasquez, City Council members, residents of the commune and other inhabitants of the region – interested in the outcome of the process. The evaluators indicated their services under the Environmental Impact Study presented by the company in the Service of Environmental Assessment (SEA), after 13 months of processing and incorporation of new requirements management and environmental monitoring. During the meeting not only discussed the project owner, but also the Organization for Community Development in Rio Verde. Thus ends the pipeline that began in January 2010, during which three consolidated reports were generated and responded to over 800 inquiries received, including those of Citizen Participation.
Jorge Pedals, general manager of Mineral Isla Crisco, welcomed the favorable vote. “For us it is very important this approval, allowing us to start implementing a project that we are confident will benefit the entire region, because it is the largest private investment in Magellan for the coming years.”
He added that “the community of Magellan should be quiet because the project was carried out with high environmental standards, equivalent to that industry in developed and applied in strict compliance with regulations. This initiative considers a system of mobile pit and progressive rehabilitation of areas affected, and the creation of a compensation area in which to develop environmental programs associated with the relocation of species, improving habitat in streams and improving the forest cover. In connection with this program, it has the most modern greenhouse Patagonia, with more than 200,000 plants of beech growing. ”
The mining and port project will require a total investment of around U.S. $ 500 million in a first stage generate about 700 jobs for the initial phase of operation, of which at least 80% will be occupied by workers and professionals of Magellan.
The project seeks to displace 30% of coal imports, which today come from Australia, Colombia and other countries.
