Fire Agates is a layered stone that is formed then water that is saturated with colloida silica and iron oxide enters a cavity in a rock and the mineral in the water starts do form new rock. When cutting, the stones layers are ground or polished off following the natural contours of the stone until the desired colored is all that is left. Grind off one to many layers and the stone is ruined.

Searching for fire agates is considered hard rock mining. The agates are usually found embedded in layers of dense limonite and rhyolite rock. Removing these gemstones from the underling bedrock without breaking the gemstones takes time and experience.

Tools required will consist of several different sizes of chisels, a screwdriver, a stiff bristle paint brush, a heavy hammer, goggles and a spray bottle to clean your specimens. After you have found a suitable claim site brush of the area with the paint brush. This will reveal the gemstones embedded in the bedrock. Very carefully chip around the gem with the chisel. Chip to close and the gem will break into pieces, this is where the experience will show.

If you are lucky you will find an seam or even a pocket full of agates. Size and shape of the gemstones has created its own language to describe them. Flowers, dog-tooth crystals and castles are just a few of the names applied to them. Dog-tooth usually is applied to the gemstones that grow from the sides of the pockets and the castles grow from the bottom. Pockets can range from orange to football in size.

The Opal Hill Fire Agate Mine is the only mine that I know of that allows the public to mine for fire agates. It is located in the the Mule Mountains not far from Palo Verde California. Normally when you think of a mine you think of a long tunnel you have to traverse deep into the mountain to find the mineral deposits. The Opal Hill mine is more of an open pit where you can spend $15 to stake your three foot square claim for the day.

The mine owners will take you by the hand and show you what to look for and how to extract the precious gemstones. Once you have mastered the process they will remain in the area for any additional questions or advice. If chipping at rock sounds like to much work you are free to search the tailing area of the mine in your quest for these elusive stones.

Another area that has become quite popular with the rock hounds is the Black Hills Rock-hound area in Arizona. It is open to the public without fees or permits. For more information contact the Stanford district, Bureau of Land Management.

Many of the finished fire agate gemstones do not look like the traditional gemstones that you find mounted in jewelery. Agates are beautifully textured and come in very odd shapes and sizes. Once you see one of these unique gemstones you will see why they have become so popular.

Fire Agates have only been discovered within the last 60 years making them the newest and rarest gemstones on the market today. Fire agates have also been found in Kingman and Golden Valley Arizona, Needles California, Mexico, and areas around the Colorado River. I strongly suggest that you visit the opal hill mine prior to hunting in any other area. This will allow you to see the type of bedrock to look for and what the embedded Fire Agates look like in there natural form.

Old west collectibles are items from the era of Cowboys and Indians that can bring alive the imagination of any collector. These collectibles help collectors to relive the past through their history, which collectors have heard throughout the years.

Collector who enjoy exploring the past and the western culture, will definitely enjoy being surrounded by old west collectibles while discovering new horizons. Old west collectibles help collectors relive the past from those glorious times in history that they have only heard about. The weapons used in the old west come in a vast assortment of products and contain unheard stories that will ignite the imagination of the most avid collector.

Cowboys who could have possibly used items within your collection will engulf the mind of the collector and make them even more fascinating. Some old west collectibles with a collectors collection could include antique photographs, Colts, Winchesters, money belts, boots, saddles, chaps, spurs, and many other valuable souvenirs. There are plenty of highly popular western prints available that collectors constantly seek to add to their collections. Old west collectibles offer an advantage for collectors within the United States, because these collectors have a better chance to capture items from this period, than collectors from other countries. Other items that collectors are constantly seeking to add to their collections are leather belts, holsters, holsters with leather lacing, and gun belts. Some collectors enjoy collecting badges that include Texas Rangers Badges, United State Marshal Badges, and various Sheriff Badges.

The old west was a time in history that only lasted thirty-five years, but the appeal and memories of this period has remained with Americans for over a hundred years and it does not seem to be fading away. Collectors enjoy collecting items from this period and then taking their time to research the item as completely and as carefully as they possible can, which will enable them to possibly find hidden secrets with the item. If a collector comes across a badge that has “Tombstone Sheriff” deeply engraved on the front, then collector will almost automatically wonder if the great Wyatt Earp ever wore that particular badge. Of course, this would be a simply amazing item to come across, but researching such an item could possible uncover remarkable stories that the item has held hidden for hundreds of years just waiting for someone to come along and discover.

Old west collectibles include replicas, stagecoaches, stage props, fast draw pistols, peacemaker pistols, derringers, letter openers, pistols, rifles, tomahawks, poker chips, hats, and many more items that have not been listed. Some collectors collect entire old west outfits, badge collections, weapon collection, or even spur collections, but then there are those collectors that will collected any item that has anything to do with the old west in general no matter what it is.

There are a lot of old west collections that are specialized in old west law badges, and there are plenty historic frontier old western American badges to choose from on the market also. Other collectors will focus their collections on old paper items such as western photographs of mining towns, cowboys, outlaws, law men, miners, saloon, and a variety of other subjects that picture any old west form. They may also collect old mining stock, bill of sales, and other legal documents that are no longer necessary.

South Wales has suffered from the environmental impact of heavy industry since the industrial revolution having the natural resource in coal measures, limestone scarps and plentiful supplies of water to support major steel, copper and tinplate production. These heavy manufacturing industries together with the mining and to a lesser extent quarrying industries have now declined. New and exciting major redevelopment of these brown field sites in the South Wales Valleys, Cardiff, Swansea and Newport supported by both European and the Welsh Assembly Government funding is rapidly changing the face of South Wales. As a matter of fact, services like asbestos surveys Wales are being requested more and more often as well as Asbestos services south wales.

Cardiff based solicitors, Russell Jones and Walker, have identified four areas in Wales where people who were exposed to asbestos decades ago, could be at risk in the future. The Vale of Glamorgan MP, John Smith, has been raising awareness of what he says will be a major health issue in this part of Wales.

“We are very proud of our industrial history, the docks, the power stations, all these have earned a great deal of wealth for our country. “The down side is, in ten, 20, 30 years after the industry has moved on we could have a huge legacy of asbestos-related diseases.” There is currently a major W.A.G. determination to upgrade both the Health and Education facilities generally throughout Wales but more particularly in the more heavily populated areas of the country such as Cardiff, Swansea, Newport and the South Wales Valleys. W.A.G. are also in the process of constructing new regional offices on brown field sites in Merthyr Tydfil, Aberystwyth and other Counties throughout the Principality.

The private sector in Wales is also very active in funding new developments such as new stadia for The Ospreys Rugby and Swansea City Football Club at Morfa in Swansea, Llanelli Rugby Football Club at Bynea, Llanelli and Leckwith Stadium for Cardiff City Football Club in Cardiff together with commercial retail outlets and associated new housing all being built on remediated sites. A rail link between the Valleys and Cardiff has just been completed and it is expected that this will assist in encouraging future commercial development in the Valleys area.

There are obvious remediation problems associated with any proposed new build on sites previously occupied by heavy industry and to this end Core Surveys is able to offer professional advice on remediation and in particular in dealing with asbestos related problems. We have successfully undertaken surveys and supervised remediation for both major house builders and civil engineering contractors in throughout Wales. Asbestos is now well known as the largest occupational health killer in the UK with 3000 people dying from asbestos related disease.

The group now most vulnerable to these risks are the building maintenance and remediation trades. From our enquiries into the extent of asbestos awareness training in South Wales we have so far found that the extent of training is woefully inadequate considering the extent of current development programmes. Unfortunately along with increased commercial activity and coupled with the current increase in temperatures comes the added risk of Legionella through hot water and heating systems.

The consequences of operating/installing inadequate or faulty industrial/commercial water heating systems adjacent to drinking water supplies can be catastrophic and regular inspection is required to ensure continued compliance with regulations. Recent high profile prosecutions have also highlighted the problem that building manager’s face as a result of legionella bacteria in water systems. Failure to carry out risk assessment of water services and put in place precautionary measures are seen as the key factors in the proliferation of the disease.

Aluminum tubes have many applications, and correspondingly, are available in various shapes and sizes. They are found as round tubing, triangular tubes, square tubes and if required, it is possible to have aluminum tubes made in unique shape combinations.

Besides differing in their shapes, aluminum tubes are also different in terms of their wall thickness. You have to choose the size, shape and wall thickness of the aluminum tube, based on what you intend to use the tube for.

Though most metals can be made into tubes, it is the characteristics of aluminum that makes it the preferred choice for most industries. These characteristics include its resistance to corrosion, it being a ductile metal and its affordability.

The marine industry needs aluminum tubes

In fact, it is in the past few years that big industries have started using aluminum tubes, because it is possible to create the required design and shape with these aluminum tubes and because it is possible to create aluminum tubes with the right wall thickness and diameter, as per specifications.

Aluminum tubes have wide scale applications in various fields. The high strength aluminum tubes are used in the marine industry, and in the production of nuclear weapons. It is used in the manufacture of huge ferries, submarines, boats, ships and other aquatic vehicles and equipment.

It is not only the many characteristics of aluminum that make aluminum tubes the preferred choice in industries. It is also because these huge industries require huge metal resources to construct their structures. And with aluminum being one of the most widely available metals of the world, it is cheaply available and just right for use in these industries.

Use the internet to order aluminum tubes to your specifications

There are many industries that cater to the manufacture and shipping needs of aluminum tubes. And one way you can find them is through the internet. It is better to work with the more famous and reputed companies as you are insured of receiving the best from them. Your business partners are also great people to ask for referrals for aluminum tube manufacturers.

Just ensure that you state your requirements and specifications properly when placing your order, so that you receive the right aluminum tubes. Of course, clarify payment and shipping issues and charges, so that there are no complications over the shipment of your aluminum tubes.

So varied are the applications of aluminum tubes. They are used for their strength in the manufacture of aircraft frames and in the bodies of rocket launchers. In the meantime, they also have applications in computers, because of heat conductivity of aluminum.

And it is because of its malleability that it is used by designers in the door and window frames of houses and buildings, and its high resistance to corrosion makes them the perfect choice for the transport of mining waste from mine fields. What more reason is required to prove that aluminum tubes are the chosen choice in most industries.

It can be argued that Britain is facing an occupational disease epidemic. Figures from the Health and Safety Executive showing that up to 20 per cent of the UK’s biggest killers, including heart disease, cancer and chronic respiratory disease, are caused by work. In England an estimated 1.9 million people have suffered from an illness that they believe was caused or made worse by their current or past work.

Approximately 25 million working days a year are lost, costing the country billions in lost production and associated costs such as compensation. The top causes of death in the UK are the most common work related health conditions including cancer, chronic respiratory disease, and circulatory disease.

The workplace is regarded as being substantial contributor to the overall mortality from these conditions with work related and industrial diseases coming in many shapes and forms including Asbestos related, Cancer, Deafness, Infections, Lead exposure, Lung related, Musculoskeletal disorders, Skin disorders/dermatitis, Stress and Vibration related disorders. It is estimated that the percentage of total mortalities attributable to the workplace can be put at 8-16% for Cancer, Heart disease 20%, Obstructive lung disease 15-20%, Asthma 15-20%, Musculoskeletal disorders 20% and Skin disease 25%. Historically mine workers have suffered higher incidences of ill health than workers in other industry sectors.

Mining in particular has a legacy of historic occupational disease: asbestos-related, respiratory disease and vibration related conditions. Coal Mining has long been associated with the dust induced lung disease ‘Pneumoconiosis’ and other illnesses such as work related ‘Emphysema’ which still have the potential to occur. The latest wave of industrial disease claims has arisen in relation to miners suffering a chronic knee condition caused by working underground.

Miners knee is thought to affect tens of thousands of miners who often found themselves working underground for up to six hours a day kneeling in sludge and cold water or crawling along a coal face less than three feet high. There are two types of condition: osteoarthritis, in which cartilage is worn away, and damage to the menisci or cartilage tissue that acts as a shock absorber in the knee joint. Typical symptoms include pain, swelling, clicking and locking of the knee.

The conditions can be progressive and permanent. A group action in the High Court is campaigning to compensate affected miners. Similar actions in relation to lung disease and a crippling hand condition often referred to as ‘white finger’, which identified in the 1976 but not defined as a prescribed disease until the mid 1990s resulted in compensation figures running into the hundreds of millions and claimants’ solicitors and personal injury lawyers earning a staggering £1.3 billion.

The DTI compensation scheme for ex miners has over 170,000 claims on behalf of workers who had suffered hand-arm vibration syndrome alone. Politicians including Barnsley West and Penistone Labour MP Michael Clapham have been urging the Government to set up its own compensation scheme to avoid the potentially hugely expense involvement of personal injury lawyers. Mr Clapham has already met with Gordon Brown who he described as positive with more meetings planned.

Turquoise is possibly the most valuable, non-transparent mineral used in jewelry. It has been mined since at least 6000 BC by Egyptians. Like other opaque such as coral, turquoise is commonly sold by the size in millimeters rather than by weight. Turquoise is usually found sandstone layers and can be seen as splotches or as a network of brown or black veins running through the sandstone. There are many small-scale mining operations that are worked by hand. Only one mine in Apache Canyon California operates at a commercial capacity today.

With a hardness of just under 6, about the hardness of window glass, this gemstone takes a good polish. It comes in white, blue, green, brown, yellow and all of the shades in between. The value of the turquoise you will find is determined by the richness of color. Robin’s egg is usually the most valuable. The more of a green hug or lightening of color will decrease the value. Turquoise should never be soft or chalky in color.

Turquoise is typically found in the arid regions of the world and some high quality gemstones have been found in the Southwest United States such as Arizona, California, Colorado, New Mexico and Nevada.

More that 120 mines have produced significant quantities of gem quality turquoise in Nevada. Nevada mines are primarily worked for the gemstone as apposed to other mining areas where turquoise is usually the result of the by product of other mining activities. The geological formation of Nevada turquoise, it is hard and dense and usually does not require any treatment or enhancements to be used in jewelry.

The Royston mining district located near Tonapah, Nevada conducts tours of the mining facility Wednesday through Saturday excluding holidays. For $100 per person you will get a bucket to fill up by picking through the tailing piles. You will need to bring gloves, hat, sunscreen, water, and a good pair of shoes.

The mines in Royston have been in operation since 1902 and by 1915 over $5,000,000 worth of turquoise has been removed from the mines. It was believed to have been the largest single producing turquoise mine in America at that time.

The Otteson’s Mine also offers mine tours, Wednesday through Friday excluding holidays. For $50 per person you will get a bucket to fill up by picking through the tailing piles.

Turquoise is found throughout the Southwest United States. Always contact the states Bureau of Land Management for any fees or permit requirements before treasure hunting on public land. Also get permission from any land owners before hunting on private property.

In Arizona turquoise has been found near Albuquerque, Bisbee, Cave Creek, Globe, Kingman, Turquoise and Birdeyes mountains.

In California turquoise has been found in San Bernardo, Imperial, and Inyo counties.

In Colorado, search Conejos, Lake, El Paso and Saguache Counties. In Nevada, search Clark, Elko, Esmeralda County, Eureka, Lander, Mineral County and Nye counties.

New Mexico, Eddy, Grant, Otero, and Santa Fe counties.

Tools you will need to hunt for turquoise; Pick Axe, rock hammer, gloves, safety glasses, bucket. Remember you are searching arid regions of the world so proper clothing is a must. Wear clothing in layers because weather can change very rapidly in these areas. Water, hat and a good sunscreen is a must.

The U.S. Forest Service operates a star garnet gemstone collection area at Emerald Creek Idaho. For a fee of $10 per day the treasure hunter can search for garnets and remove a maximum of five pounds of gemstones. Screen boxes, buckets and shovels are provided by the Forest Service; however you should bring drinking water, snacks, sunscreen, hat, gloves and a container for your treasures. The treasure hunting season starts at the end of May and lasts until after Labor Day. No pets allowed.

How Is It Done

Use the shovel and fill your five gallon plastic bucket with dirt and rocks at the mining area. Next take your bucket to the screening area and sift all of the dirt and sand leaving only the rocks. Next take your collection of rocks to one of the two sluice boxes to wash the material and look for garnets. Any rock that appears to have a shiny plastic like shine could be a garnet.

The garnets found at emerald creek are nearly opaque and will be a dark reddish or purple in color. Good quality large gemstones are rare and about one half of the gemstones you discover will not be of a quality suitable for cutting or polishing. Many of the stones will show a four ray star but the six ray star is quite rare. A good quality star garnet may fetch up to $100 per carat.

The garnet name is believed to have come from the pomegranate. Many of the ancient pieces of jewelry have clusters of red stones that do look a lot like a cluster of pomegranate seeds. Travelers often carried garnets to protect them from accidents. Legends suggest that garnets will glow at night and will protect the owner from nightmares. Noah has also been rumored to have used a garnet lantern to navigate the Ark at night.

The Amethyst gemstones range in color from pale lilac to deep purple. Gemstones with the deepest colors are the most valuable and some of these fine gemstones are featured in the British Crown Jewels. Amethyst is a transparent quartz crystal and is used in many pieces of striking jewelry today.

Amethysts, Gold and other Gemstones can be mined by the public at the Gold’n Gem Grubbing mine in Georgia. For a fee of $15 for a half day or $25 for the full day the treasure hunter can mine just like the ole timers did. All tools needed for treasure hunting is provided by the mine operators. You can dig the ore from the commercial mining pit which has been piled at the edge of the creek by dump trucks. Fill up a couple of buckets and take your finds to the creek for panning and screening.

Amethyst, Emeralds, Sapphires, Topaz and Gold have been found by rock hounds at the Gold’n Gem Grubbing mine. You never know what you may find so having a good gemology reference book handy can pay for itself very quickly. Especially one that will show you what the rough gemstones look like right out of the ground. I recommend bring a hat, gloves, sun screen, proper clothing, wading boots and a fold up stool. Kneeling in a stream panning all day can be a killer on the knees.

Kneeling in a stream all day is not your idea of a fun time? You can purchase buckets of ore and screen them at the convenient sluices. Trained staff is always nearby to help you identify your treasures. Buckets of ore can be purchased for $10.00 for a 1 gallon, $30.00 for a 2.5 gallon, $60.00 for a 5 gallon, and $100.00 for the Mother lode 5 gallon bucket. Buckets of ore come with a $15.00, $30.00, and $50.00 credit towards having jewelry made with the gemstones you find. The mine operators even have a Master Jeweler on hand to turn your treasure into a striking piece of jewelry.

Myth And February

If you were born in February, then you will have a special reason to go Amethysts treasure hunting, because it is your birthstone. It is also the stone to give as presents on your 33 Th wedding anniversary. Legend has it that wearing or keeping an Amethysts on your person not only protects its wearer against seduction but is also a symbol of trust and piety.

Moses said that the amethysts gemstone is a symbol of the Spirit of God and the gemstone was often used in the official robes of the High Priest of the Jews. The Greek word for Amethysts means not intoxicated and the popular belief is that the gemstone offers protection against drunkenness. It is also said to protect crops against tempest and locusts, bring good fortune in war, inspire the intellect and if worn around the neck on a cord made from dogs hair it would protect against snakebite.

Amethyst will change color when it is heated. This gemstone should not be worn while sunbathing or anywhere there is black lighting. Sudden changes in temperatures can be harmful. Smoky colored stones can become yellow to brownish red with temperatures as little as 250 degrees. Stones with a high degree of transparency become yellow or colorless when exposed to temperatures of 400 degrees.
